Flying the Coop

Another chapter, a new adventure…

Matthew‘s blog containing thoughts about the small things in life.

  • Le blog post.

This is my minimum requirement for a daily blog. Please check back again soon! Be kind! M3

  • Today was a bad day…

Today was not a good day. It ended well with Thanksgiving dinner at the nerd cafe though, which is good. But everything before that was horrible. Basically my body and my mind aren’t doing well and it’s negatively affecting my daily life. Today it got really, really bad. Now I’m going to sleep. M3

  • Testing!!

The following is a test of the blog alert system. Please respond by panicking in the comment section below. BLOG ALERT!! Danger! A warning has been issued on the blog alert system! Chaos and anarchy have descended upon us! Danger! In case it isn’t clear, you should now panic. M3

  • Why I can’t sleep.

I haven’t been able to get to sleep very easily these past few weeks. [I can’t write tonight. I’ll finish in the morning.]

  • People aren’t just one thing…we’re complex.

Question. How much of planet Earth can anyone see at once? Practically speaking… very little. But even if you were standing on our moon (why are you doing that?) you would only be able to see 49% of Earth’s surface. Does this mean that only less than half of the Earth exists? If you were holding a Timbit (also known as a “donut hole”) in your hand, you’d only see a portion of the Timbit. Taking this example further, let’s say you are somehow able to flatten the Timbit so you could see all of its surface at one time, you…

  • I’m becoming a coffee person!

I’ve never been one for coffee. I’ve never even wanted to drink coffee, but over the summer that’s changed. I started drinking iced coffee every once in a while. And while I still don’t like straight coffee, the bitter taste of coffee in general has become more palatable in frappes and such. Never did I peg myself as a coffee person. (I still don’t think I quite qualify since I don’t drink just coffee.) But I guess the change makes sense, especially now that I’m working at a coffee house. I’m a barista! What’s up with that?? It’s crazy! And…

  • Thanksgiving is coming up!

This weekend is Thanksgiving weekend (in Canada)! I’m going to be here in Vancouver by myself for the holiday, but that’s alrighty with me. And when I say “by myself”, I’m talking about with my immediate family. Everyone else is going to be up in Grande Prairie. While I won’t be seeing family, I will be attending a Thanksgiving dinner Saturday evening at the nerd cafe down the street. It’s going to be amazing! This is the fifth year they’re doing it and I’m told that everyone leaves stuffed so much that they can barely breathe! In fact, the owner…

  • Top three goals for October!

October is here and the first day has already come to a close. Let’s set some goals! 1. Exercise and eat more regularly. I’ve been struggling to eat enough food over the past few weeks. That’s not great. I also haven’t been doing enough meaningful movement for my body, which is important because I’m still recovering from being sick. I have tools to work on and track my health but I haven’t been using them at all. One is a 30-day fitness challenge app that I’ve been wanting to start for a while, and this is a great opportunity for…

  • Oh man… I just napped for over two hours!

I totally didn’t mean to nap, but I feel great after it! Now I’m gonna grab some food, watch an episode of Community or two, then head to bed. Today’s been a good day! I wasn’t expecting to work at all, but overall things worked out well. September is Over! Can you even believe it? September only has a few hours remaining—soon it will be October. What happened there? How is it that we’re already at this point? I’m almost ready to freak out because of this, but I’ll try not to do that. The past month has been up…

  • MILK + MAPLE SYRUP

Dude. So last night I was thirsty, right? I wanted something a little more than water. Looking through the fridge, I spotted our carton of milk. After thinking for a moment, I pulled it out revealing the bottle of maple syrup. For some reason I thought the two should be introduced to each other. I pulled out a glass, poured some milk, then added the maple syrup. Man, was I onto something! The milk and the syrup were dancing around in my mouth! Oh my goodness, they were so good together!! You should try it! It just makes sense. Everything…

  • Is this working?

The main purpose of this blog is to get me writing every day. That has happened and will continue to happen! However, I feel like the actual content about which I write is lacking. My thought about that probably is influenced by my lack of sleep this week. Anyway… today marked the one-year anniversary of The Aux Cable! YAY!! Ryan’s currently travelling home so we didn’t celebrate at all, but we might do something soon to celebrate. What that will be remains undetermined, but it deserves to be acknowledged! A few of our core fans agree with that thought and…

  • Best day in a long time!

Today has been the best day in a long time. Weirdly, I only got three hours of sleep last night, but I still was filled with energy, enthusiasm, and the drive to actually complete tasks. It’s great! M3

  • A day of extremes!

Today has been full of extreme surprises! It started with me not falling asleep until 7:30-ish in the morning and then waking up at 10:30-ish to the sound of my phone. It was a text from my sister who had left for work before I even fell asleep. She had news about her boss changing her mind about me. Suddenly she was willing to give me a shot! This is at a little cafe two blocks away. I’ve applied for other jobs (and I’m still waiting to hear back from some of them), but this looks to most promising and…

  • Installment number two.

A firm hand closed around James’ left arm and yanked it backwards. James once again lost his footing. He caught me! No, I must keep running! James was frozen as panic took over every one of his senses. The banana has now caught him and there was nothing he could do. “James, come on. This way!” The banana hissed at him. “Get up! We can’t get caught out here, let’s go!” The voice was harsh but not too loud. The banana must be running too, but from what? James was pulled down the street by the banana figure. His feet…

  • It’s finally begun.

A new iteration of Star Trek for television was announced back in the fall of 2015. Two years later we are watching the premiere of that series which is titled Star Trek: Discovery. The series is set ten years before the original series of Star Trek during the Klingon war with the Federation, an event in Trek history that was mentioned several times but not explored in any detail. There are many aspects of this new show that sets it apart from the preceding six series, but chief among them is that the entire season is highly serialized and the…

  • Wanted. (Something that popped into my head.)

BAM!! James felt like he had just been hit by a car. His ears were ringing. The world around him appeared dark and blurry. As he tried to pick himself up from the pavement, one thing kept rolling around in his head: Run. Keep running. But James could barely determine which way was up let alone why he would need to run. Panic was taking over. His feet stumbled as they tried to propel his body forward. Run. You have to run! Don’t stop! Hands reaching out. Darkness enveloping. Run, you idiot! Keep moving! Run! Panic. Confusion. A flash of…

  • Rewrite this, Matthew.

Like, for reals, okay? Okay, okay… I’m writing an actual post now. Let’s do another update! So yesterday (aka today, in terms of when this post was supposed to be written) I took transit down to New Westminster for a simple little medical test. The test was negative, which is good in this case! However, because I’m taking medications that alter my immune system, they need to do a more extensive test on my blood to confirm the results. So they handed me another lab requisition for yet another test that I’ll have to get completed on Monday. AND the…

  • It went well!

Two things for today’s post. First My MRI went well! I want expecting to be presented with two liters of chilled Peglyte (polyethylene glycol) to drink in two minutes. Let me tell you, that stuff is nasty! And it makes you need to evacuate your bowels after cramping and stuff. But it needed to happen so they could take beautiful pictures of my small intestine. They also injected some kind of a muscle relaxant targeted at my intestines so they’d stop moving, providing a clearer picture. So really, MRI scans are hugely expensive photoshoots using a giant magnet-powered camera with…

  • I’m getting scanned tomorrow!

And now the continuing adventures of… My Life With Crohn’s! Last month my doctor ordered a few tests and scans before we change my medications. Weirdly enough, most of those tests and scans were scheduled for this week. And lucky me because tomorrow I get to be scanned! Kinda like Spock scanning for life forms on planets and starships, except this scan isn’t in the 23rd century. So I’m getting an MRI tomorrow morning and I’m super excited. So excited, in fact, that I marked it on my calendar and have decided to fast until after the MRI is complete!…

  • What’s the deal with PB&J??

Peanut butter and jam. Incredibly delicious together, right? But why? Why do those two flavours meld together so delightfully? You’ve got a slightly salty, ooey gooey paste that coats your mouth next to a chilly, gelatinous substance that is usually fruity or berry-y and they both share a space between two slices of amazing bread. What’s not to like? The peanuts give you protein too, which is always a good thing, especially for us veggies! Anyway. I just wanted to recognize Edward P. B. Jamb for his amazing invention that we still enjoy to this day. It’s a miraculously scrumptious…
